Lunchtime yesterday saw the allocation of the latest round of Sports Capital Grants in Ireland. It was pretty common knowledge that the club was in desperate need of funding to improve our all-weather training area which sadly is not fit for purpose. 12 months ago the club was shot down for a similar project but this year we were confident that funds could be secured. A lot of hardwork was done in the back round getting quotes, drawings, meetings etc & of course the application itself which takes many days to complete. Our project was to cost €135k which included the extension of our all-weather, proper floodlighting, fencing & a change to the playing surface to the most modern type. We were offered yesterday by the Government €16k towards this project which equates to 11% of the overall cost! That leaves the people of Crosshaven to come up with €119k! We are awaiting feedback on why the offer is so low but needless to say for the second year in a row the club has been left feeling deflated & personally I'm disgusted. More often then not the offers equate to 50% plus of the the total cost. 11% is a joke.
With the advent of the new season , Crosshaven AFC will be entering a teams at U15, U14, U13, U12 & U11 levels as well all numerous small sided teams & Girls teams. It is the makeup of the incoming U11 side that seems to be causing much concern. A club decision was taken recently to move forward with just two coaches in charge of this team, Vaughan Moore & Eric Morley. It was felt by the club that we could not proceed with four parents in charge of the team as this could cause issues for the coaches down the line in relation to team selection. Sadly this meant that both Gavin Williamson & Brendan Foley would be no longer involved with the team going forward from a managerial point of view. It must be stated though that this decision was in no way a reflection on the work that these two lads have done with the team. They have been outstanding coaches, dedicated, organised, fair & enthusiastic. The club hope they will have a bright future with one of our other teams in the club & possibly at U11 level with a second team as next years U11 league will be 9 a side. Crosshaven AFC would like to point out that stories of their "removal" or "sacking" are untrue & grossly unwarranted.

The U11's had a busy 10 days with home games against Macroom, Corkbeg & Fermoy as well as an away game with Castleview on Thursday 8th. It all started well as the lads demolished Macroom in Camden by 9-0. All 16 players playing at least 30 minutes. Goals from Ehatn Berkery Kelly (3), Christian Byrne (3), Rory O’Sullivan (2) & a first ever goal for Adam Darcy. Best for Crosshaven were Kai Murphy & Eoin Murphy. On Bank Holiday Monday the lads came from 4-2 with five minutes remaining to snatch a deserved point against Corkbeg in appalling conditions. Christian Byrne, Patrick Cotter & Rory O'Sullivan (2) including a last gasp free kick to level the game. The Castleview game pitted 4th & 5th in the table. By half time Crosshaven were well in control thanks to two poachers goals from Conor Finn. The second period saw the introduction of live wire Padraig Murphy & within 15 minutes he had doubled Crosshaven's advantage with a header and a wonderful finish after a excellent through ball from Peter Lehane. Sunday morning last saw a much depleted U11's still easily overcome the challenge of Fermoy. Two OG's, two from Ethan Berkery Kelly & one from Zach Murphy put the lads on the road to a 5-2 win. Best for Crosshaven were Ronan O'Donoughue, Adam Welch & Liam Cotter.

Busy weekend of fixtures all round as the Easter break & long evenings kick in. Firstly the U11’s played Premier League leaders Lakewood away in the Cup on Thursday night. Despite a good first half performance it was Lakewood who ran out winners. The 11’s did get back to winning ways Saturday morning turning in a superb performance against Greenwood in Togher. Goals from Ethan Berkery Kellly, Zach Murphy & Patrick Cotter sealed victory in a 3-1 win. Man of the Match Ronan O’Donoughue. Also on Saturday the Seniors defeated Leeside away by 2-1 & in Camden the U9’s were superb in their opening small sided games blitz with Inishvilla.
Sunday saw the 13’s turn in a super performance in Camden to run out 5-3 winners while the 8’s put Richmond to the sword in the small sided blitz in Camden. The U10’s opened their season with a massive 1-0 win in Carrigaline. Crosshaven dominated proceedings & got their reward when Padraig Murphy volleyed home a second half winner. Well done to all involved, superb team performance.
The only blips this weekend were the Girls U16’s & U18’s both bowing out of the cups at the hands of Bandon & Lakewood.

The Crosshaven U13s travelled to Cobh Friday night to play Springfield and got off to a great start in their League going 2-nil up with the first goal from Ronan Lawlor and a tip off the head of Dara O'Connell ending up in the back of the net for the second. However Springfield got back into the game and went 3-2 up. Crosshaven never gave up and terrific play from the whole team in particular Peter O'Brien and Jay Kelly saw them digging deep to stay in the game. In the second half Super Sub Robert Twomey raced down the middle and struck the equaliser getting a well earned point on the table for Crosshaven.
On Saturday, Crosshaven U14s had a tough start to their league campaign, away to a very strong Bandon side who beat them 6-1. They had a good first half performance but ran out of steam for the second half. Best for Crosshaven on the day was Ben O'Brien with the goal coming from Jack O'Connell.
Crosshaven U12s were at home Sunday morning for their first ever competitive league match against Avondale. The seasiders got off to a flying start with a great goal from Robert Twomey and a second goal quickly followed from the head of Darragh Kidney. However Avondale came back strong and were 4-2 up by half time. A good talk at half time saw the team quickly focus and Robert Twomey got into top form scoring 3 more goals along with 2 from Luke Campbell Brookes who then went into Goal to strengthen the defence. Overall a terrific performance from all the team as they finished up with a great win 7-4.
Seniors - Lost their first home game of the season against Ballincollig 1-3. Neil Murphy with his first Senior goal for the club. Crosshaven were without the injured Beezer & Behan but on another day could have at least claimed a point.
